A change in technology for the Aiacciu Datacenter cooling system

This project takes into account in its design and implementation numerous constraints and major challenges, namely:

Technical constraints:

  • A secure architecture (equipment redundancy);
  • A optimized urbanization, thanks to thermal confinement;
  • Un high level of performance cooling equipment;
  • A scalability facilities.

A reliability issue:

  • Choice of material;
  • Level of availability ;
  • Maintainability : accessibility of equipment.

Performance constraints:

  • Energetic performance materials used;
  • Thermal performance of the solution (confinement, high density);
  • Environmental performance of the solution (compliance with standards, European Datacenter Code of Conduct, etc.).

The response provided therefore aims to:

To secure cooling of equipment by installing redundant equipment from a cooling and electrical point of view.

Decrease significantly reduce the energy consumption of utilities (and therefore reduce the PUE of the Datacenter) by implementing air flow separation on the one hand and installing high-performance equipment on the other.

Increase the future capacity of the computer room by redeveloping the computer bays in order to optimize the usable surface area.

Free Cooling technology

Winter operation (total free cooling)

When the outside air temperature is low enough, the control system activates the free cooling pump which circulates water inside several cooling batteries. The water is then cooled by the outside air introduced by the fans which, together with the pump, are the only components that consume energy.

Mid-season operation (partial free cooling)

The chilled water first passes through the cooling coil to be pre-cooled, then through the evaporator to be cooled to the set point by the direct expansion circuit. The compressors are running, but partially.

Summer operation (Mechanical cooling)

The compressors are running. All of the chilled water is cooled in the evaporator using the direct expansion circuit.

An ambition for environmental excellence

The main environmental footprint of a data center is its electricity consumption. This consumption depends in particular on the energy efficiency ratio of the data center, the PUE (Power Usage Eeffectiveness).

Free Cooling technology, installed in the SITEC Aiacciu Datacenter, allows us to reduce cooling consumptions, the main factor to optimize the PUE.

The savings envisaged are between 20% and 40% on the electricity consumption of the Datacenter.

By investing in this technology, SITEC is carrying out its first major project, reflecting its ambition for environmental excellence.
